If you are using MS-SQL 2005 you need to get a copy of the 2005 Performance Dashboard. It's a free upgrade to MS-SQL 2005 from Microsoft. This add-on product became available shortly after the release of Service Pack 2 for SQL Server 2005.
The SQL Server 2005 Performance Dashboard allows a system administrator to quickly capture statistics on the performance of SQL 2005 and, if bottlenecks exist, take the necessary actions to resolve the issue. For example, if the system is slowing down due to excessive disk IO, the dashboard identifies which sessions are causing the delays and what queries are running.
Other issues the dashboard will help identify include CPU bottlenecks (and what tasks are causing them), indexing problems, lock contention, and blocking tasks.
